To many fonts

I have so many fonts that it takes me at least half an hour but more like an hour to choose the right font.

Last week I came a cross this website this website you enter a word and this website will show you that word in all the font you have installed on your computer.

No more scrolling through your fonts list šŸ™‚

This website is free if you only use it to see your fonts. They have many extra features but that is not free and will cost 4$ a month

Spiral Picture with vinyl or HTV

Spiral Pictures who hasnt seen them.

It looks kinda tricky but it isnt as hard as it seems.

It al starts with a cute an perfect picture

Spiral Betty is the website everyone uses to get their pictures turned into a spiral. Unfortunately you can only download a jpg file so you need to do some tracing.

You can adjust your spiral on 4 levels, how many spirals you want, you can crop your picture, you can make your picture lighter and darker and give it more or less contrast.

When you have adjust your picture you can download the jpg.

You can trace the jpg in Scal, inkscape, design space, illustrator and other programs that can trace images and turn them in to svg files.

For the scan n cut users i advice to put your file into fcm because that extenstion loads way faster then svg in the machine.

In this tutorial i used inkscape but i prefer SCAL that is my design program i always use.

How to trace an image to make a cut file

tracing in inkscape

Most important when you want to make a cut file it needs to be svg ( which you can make or buy) or fcm this is a scanncut only file.

If you search for an image on google alway search for a coloring page or line art. Because when you trace an image you need clear lines.

Also realize that most images on google are jpg, or png. The easy way to explain is that svg or fcm is an english language and jpg and png is dutch. Your machine can only understand english. And saving a jpg as svg is like changing the bookcover in english but the story is still dutch.

Now open Inkscape and open your image make sure you click on your image and you see arrows around your image like this. Keep in mind that images on the internet are copyrighted and you can’t use it for commercial use and i am using this only for education meaning.

Go naar File- import

Choose file

Click on ok

go to menu path – trace bitmap

There will pop up a new screen.Make sure you click on the live preview box and play with the settings up and down until you think the image is ok.

Then click ok. Now you have 2 images.

If you drag the image to the side you will see 2 images. The first is the traced file and the second the one in the back is the original. You can select the original and delete it.

No you can save the file as plain svg and you have your cut file.

If you want to make it in different colors and layers you need to do some more steps

If you click on view and select display outlines only you will see only the lines which your machine will cut and if you want to you can remove lines you dont want to be cut.

If you want to make it in different colors and layers you need to do some more steps

If you want to color your image go back to view and select normal again.

You select the bucket and color the all the parts in the color you want like this

If you are done with the colors you can drag the image to the side and you will see all parts are separated and colored if you push ctrl+z you wil undo your previous action like dragging the colors and they will  be back in place.

Now save as plain svg and load it in canvas or any other program you use to cut your files. Make your image the right size save it like that. and then go group the colors and parts you want and can cut on 1 mat and save it as a different file and open the saved compleet image again and get the other parts until you have all parts and colors. Now you are ready to cut sent one of the files to your machine put the right colors of material on the mat. Scan the mat so you see where the colors are on your mat and you can move the parts exactly on the material that needs to be cut.

You can save the file on a usb stick as svg and put it right in a brother scanncut or open it in canvas and save as a fcm file. If you save it as fcm for the scanncut the machine has less trouble reading it and it will load way faster.

go to downloads or if you use the wifi function choose that option to send it to your machine

Perfect fonts to use with your draw function

A lot of fonts seem perfect to use with your draw function on your machine, but when you actually use them you see that most fonts aren’t filled in. There is a solution for that and i will come back to it later in this post. It took me quite some time to collect fonts that you can just use with your pen without the need to get the letters filled. Also important to know is that it really makes a difference if you use the markers that come with the machine or when you use your own pens. I tested the fonts with the markers that come with the scanncut machine and i tested the fonts with a gel pen that fit in the universal Pen Holder. You will see that when you use a marker which has a thicker point to write with you can use more fonts then when you use a gel pen which has a really small point. Drawing pens scanncut Universal holder scanncut
Fonts written with the standard holder and markers
Fonts written with the universal holder and gel pen
As you can see in the pictures when you write with markers the fonts are perfect and there are no blank spaces. However if you look at the next picture where the fonts are written with a golden gel pen. I marked the fonts that where perfect with the gel pen as well. Font 1, 2, 8 and 9. The other fonts show small empty places. If you want the letter filled to give them the real handwriting look you can do 2 things. 1. is the easy way and color the letters yourself you can even do it with an other color which can give an awesome effect. 2. Let the machine color it for you. With the program Sure Cuts a lot also called SCAL you type your text and then go to effects and choose Line fill and use the settings like in the picture. Now you can see in the pictures below how the letters look before the fill and after the fill effect Below you see a list with the links where you can find the fonts some of them are free others are not.

Last year I came across magnet sheets and of course I brought them with me because I thought you should be able to make something nice out of that. After having been in the closet for a few weeks, I suddenly got a nice idea.

I made a nice Christmas tree with separated decorations so that my then 5 year old son could decorate the tree himself and change it whenever he wants.

What do you need

1 pack of magnet sheets

Colored paper ( the magnet sheets have an adhesive layer) or adhesive vinyl
