DIY: A Beautiful Etched Mirror with Personalized Ribbon for Mother’s Day

DIY: A Beautiful Etched Mirror with Personalized Ribbon for Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day is just around the corner, and what better way to show your love and appreciation for your mom than by giving her a personalized, homemade gift? In this DIY tutorial, we’ll show you how to create a stunning etched mirror with a personalized ribbon that your mom will treasure for years to come.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • A mirror
  • Vinyl adhesive
  • Transfer tape
  • A cutting machine (or scissors if you prefer to cut the design by hand)
  • Glass etching cream
  • A paintbrush
  • Tweezers
  • Ribbon
  • An iron /press
  • My digital cut file available in my webshop
  • Iron on vinyl

Step 1: Design your mirror

Start by designing your mirror on your computer.

Load the file to your cutting machine, with vinyl you have loads of or an ugly color you never use.

Step 2: Apply the vinyl to the mirror

Use transfer tape to apply the vinyl to the mirror. Make sure the vinyl is firmly adhered to the mirror with no air bubbles. Use tweezers to hold small pieces of vinyl in place if necessary.

Step 3: Apply the etching cream

Apply the etching cream to the open areas of the vinyl with a paintbrush. Follow the instructions on the etching cream packaging for the correct time and amount. Make sure you use a well-ventilated area and protect yourself with gloves and safety goggles.

Step 4: Remove the vinyl

After the waiting period, rinse the mirror under running water to remove the etching cream. Then, remove the vinyl from the mirror. When you remove the vinyl, you’ll see your design etched onto the mirror!

Step 5: Personalize the ribbon

Now it’s time to personalize the ribbon. Make a text with your Iron on vinyl or your mom’s name to put on the ribbon. Heat up the iron  or press and place the ribbon on top. Iron the ribbon and letter stencils until the letters are well attached.

Step 6: Finish the gift

Finally, all that’s left to do is tie the personalized ribbon around the mirror and your gift is ready! Your mom will love that you put in the effort to create a unique and personal gift just for her.

Etching a mirror and personalizing a ribbon may seem intimidating at first, but with a little patience and creativity, you can create a beautiful gift that your mom will cherish for years to come. Happy Mother’s Day!

Spiral Picture with vinyl or HTV

Spiral Pictures who hasnt seen them.

It looks kinda tricky but it isnt as hard as it seems.

It al starts with a cute an perfect picture

Spiral Betty is the website everyone uses to get their pictures turned into a spiral. Unfortunately you can only download a jpg file so you need to do some tracing.

You can adjust your spiral on 4 levels, how many spirals you want, you can crop your picture, you can make your picture lighter and darker and give it more or less contrast.

When you have adjust your picture you can download the jpg.

You can trace the jpg in Scal, inkscape, design space, illustrator and other programs that can trace images and turn them in to svg files.

For the scan n cut users i advice to put your file into fcm because that extenstion loads way faster then svg in the machine.

In this tutorial i used inkscape but i prefer SCAL that is my design program i always use.

Perfect fonts to use with your draw function

A lot of fonts seem perfect to use with your draw function on your machine, but when you actually use them you see that most fonts aren’t filled in. There is a solution for that and i will come back to it later in this post. It took me quite some time to collect fonts that you can just use with your pen without the need to get the letters filled. Also important to know is that it really makes a difference if you use the markers that come with the machine or when you use your own pens. I tested the fonts with the markers that come with the scanncut machine and i tested the fonts with a gel pen that fit in the universal Pen Holder. You will see that when you use a marker which has a thicker point to write with you can use more fonts then when you use a gel pen which has a really small point. Drawing pens scanncut Universal holder scanncut
Fonts written with the standard holder and markers
Fonts written with the universal holder and gel pen
As you can see in the pictures when you write with markers the fonts are perfect and there are no blank spaces. However if you look at the next picture where the fonts are written with a golden gel pen. I marked the fonts that where perfect with the gel pen as well. Font 1, 2, 8 and 9. The other fonts show small empty places. If you want the letter filled to give them the real handwriting look you can do 2 things. 1. is the easy way and color the letters yourself you can even do it with an other color which can give an awesome effect. 2. Let the machine color it for you. With the program Sure Cuts a lot also called SCAL you type your text and then go to effects and choose Line fill and use the settings like in the picture. Now you can see in the pictures below how the letters look before the fill and after the fill effect Below you see a list with the links where you can find the fonts some of them are free others are not.

Hot mess Canvas

Hot mess Canvas

Many of  you have seen the HOT MESS CANVAS on many Facebook groups

You start with a canvas and paint it with different colors. ( I only used 2 blue and grey) these colors will be your design colors.

This is also a fun project to do with your kids for fathers day. You give the the canvas, a brush and paint and let them paint it any way they want to. In de mean time you can make your design and cut it out on your machine with vinyl.

I made this text which is also available in my shop as cut file but also as a vinyl sticker.

When the canvas is dry you can apply the vinyl.

(This can be tricky because the paint can give some trouble to get the vinyl to stick. Use a hair blower to get it to stick to the canvas and make sure your transfer tape isn’t to sticky)

As you can see on the picture i only used blue and grey and put black vinyl on it.

You can leave it like this i like it this way as well but then again you don’t  have the awesome effect i show you in the next picture.

Now my text has these awesome colors and you have a perfect gift.

I chose to paint my canvas white again and when the paint was almost dry i removed the black vinyl.

How fun is this to do this with your kids for fathers day or just make a awesome hot mess for your self as wall decor.

Happy crafting
