Understanding file types will help you choose the correct download for your project.
SVG
SVG stands for Scalable Vector Graphics.
SVG files are usually the best choice for cutting machines because they contain separate shapes and layers. They can be resized without becoming blurry or losing quality.

SVG files are commonly used for:
- Vinyl decals
- Paper crafts
- Cardstock projects
- Stencils
- Signs
- Cake toppers
- Layered designs
A properly prepared SVG may allow you to change individual colors, remove pieces, and work with separate layers inside Cricut Design Space.
When purchasing SVG designs, always check which file formats are included and whether the design is compatible with your cutting software.
PNG
PNG stands for Portable Network Graphics.
PNG files are image files that can support transparent backgrounds. They are commonly used for:
- Sublimation
- Print Then Cut stickers
- Printable transfers
- Digital scrapbooking
- Printable craft projects

Unlike an SVG, a PNG is usually a flat image. Its individual elements cannot normally be separated into editable cutting layers.
For sublimation, look for a high-resolution PNG with a transparent background and a resolution of around 300 DPI.
JPG or JPEG
A JPG or JPEG is another common image file type.
JPG files do not support transparent backgrounds. Any background shown in the file becomes part of the image.
They are commonly used for:
- Printable pages
- Photographs
- Full-background designs
- Mockups
- Digital previews

For designs that need a transparent background, a PNG is usually the better option.
DXF
DXF stands for Drawing Exchange Format.
DXF files are vector-based files that may be included with SVG bundles. They are sometimes used with older versions of cutting software that do not support SVG uploads.
This file is also included with my SVG designs
DXF files may open without color information and can be less convenient to edit than SVG files.
ZIP File
A ZIP file is a compressed folder containing one or more files.
Digital craft bundles often arrive as ZIP folders because they may include several formats, such as:
- SVG
- PNG
- DXF
- EPS
Before uploading the designs into Cricut Design Space, you usually need to extract or unzip the folder.
On most computers, you can right-click the ZIP folder and choose Extract All. On many mobile devices, tapping the ZIP folder will automatically create an extracted folder.
Do not upload the complete ZIP folder directly into Cricut Design Space.
