In this tutorial, I share the full DIY journey of crafting a matching gift set — a sublimated tapered latte mug and a custom candle in a glass jar — made with love for two very special ladies turning 75. Using some clever Cricut design hacks and an airfryer mug press trick, this tutorial shows just how personal (and efficient!) handmade gifts can be.
What You’ll Learn
- Design Preparation in Cricut Design Space
Create and size your design precisely for both a tapered mug and a candle jar. Use “Print then Cut” for crisp, clean stickers that fit just right. - Sublimation Using an Airfryer
- Set the stage: Preheat at 180°C (356°F) for 4 minutes with the mug handle facing right.
- Flip halfway: After the first 4 minutes, rotate the handle to the left and continue heating to ensure even color and no missed spots.
- Clamping for Perfect Results
- Use silicone mug clamps tailored to the shape of the tapered mug — they grip tightly, leaving no room for air bubbles that may cause blurring or failed prints.
- Skip the all-around tape; the clamps are secure and save time.
- Cooling Safely
Keep a bucket of water nearby—once the mug is done, dunk it in to cool down instantly and safely. - Applying the Candle Sticker
- Print your design on sticker paper or printable vinyl using the Print & Cut feature.
- Cut it precisely via Cricut, peel, and apply to a clean glass jar—smoothing from center out to avoid bubbles.
- Glove Safety Lessons
I tried using heat-resistant gloves with pink dots, but they melted under the heat—learn from me, they’re not suitable for high-temp sublimation!
Pro Tips from the Tutorial
- Align before clamping: Tape the design lightly only to align it with the handle—to ensure every detail lines up perfectly.
- Why tapered clams are game changers: Because they match the mug’s shape and eliminate trapped air, they improve transfer quality and save prep time.
- Stay focused: The “right side first, then left” timing trick helps you catch yourself if distracted—you’re always sure whether it’s the first or second heat cycle happening.
