If you love making personalized gifts with your Cricut, fishing-themed tumblers are honestly one of the easiest and most satisfying projects to make.
They’re practical, customizable, beginner-friendly, and they make great Father’s Day gifts without feeling overly cheesy or generic.
I recently made this “Hooked on Dad Life” fishing tumbler using two colors of permanent adhesive vinyl, and I absolutely love how simple but bold it turned out.
Using two vinyl colors instantly makes designs look more professional and layered, even when the actual project is surprisingly easy to make.
This style works perfectly for:
- Father’s Day gifts
- fishing lovers
- camping dads
- lake-life gifts
- outdoor-themed tumblers
- personalized drinkware
And the best part is that you don’t need sublimation or expensive equipment to make something that looks custom and handmade.
Materials I Used
For this project I used:
- stainless steel tumbler
- Cricut cutting machine
- permanent adhesive vinyl in 2 colors
- transfer tape
- scraper tool
- weeding tool
- standard grip mat
- free fishing SVG design
- scissors
For my tumbler, I used:
- dark blue vinyl for the text
- bright green vinyl for the fishing line and fish skeleton
The contrast between the two colors really helped the design pop on the stainless steel surface.
Why Two-Color Vinyl Designs Look So Good
One thing I love about layered vinyl designs is how much more dimensional they feel compared to single-color decals.
Even simple designs instantly look:
- more polished
- more intentional
- more custom
- more eye-catching
For fishing-themed designs specifically, separating elements into different colors works really well because you can highlight:
- text
- fishing hooks
- fishing lines
- fish graphics
- outdoor elements
without making the design feel too busy.
Choosing the Right Vinyl Colors
For fishing and outdoors-themed projects, earthy and rustic colors usually work best.
Some great color combinations:
- navy + sage green
- dark green + cream
- black + tan
- blue + silver
- forest green + white
- olive + gold
I personally love combining darker masculine colors with softer outdoors-inspired tones because it gives the tumbler more of a cozy cabin aesthetic instead of looking overly sporty.
Designing the Fishing Decal
For this tumbler, I used a fishing-themed SVG with:
- a fishing line border
- hook detail
- fish skeleton graphic
- bold layered text
Designs with thick clean lines work best for tumblers because they:
- weed easier
- transfer easier
- hold up better over time
Tiny details can become frustrating quickly on curved surfaces, especially for beginners.
Step 1 – Cut Your Vinyl Colors Separately
The first step is separating your design by color.
I cut:
- the dark blue text layer first
- then the bright green fishing graphic layer
This makes assembly much easier later.
When cutting layered vinyl projects, I always recommend:
- slowing down slightly
- double checking sizing
- and leaving enough spacing between pieces
before cutting.
Step 2 – Weed the Design Carefully
Once the vinyl is cut, carefully weed away the excess vinyl around the design.
For fishing designs, the hook and fishing line details usually require the most patience.
One thing I’ve learned is that good lighting makes a huge difference when weeding darker vinyl colors.
A weeding tool with a sharp tip also helps a lot for small fishing line details.
Step 3 – Apply Transfer Tape
After weeding both layers, apply transfer tape over the vinyl.
I like using a scraper tool to really press the transfer tape down evenly before lifting the vinyl backing.
This helps prevent smaller pieces from staying behind.
Step 4 – Layer the Vinyl Colors
This is honestly the fun part.
Carefully align the second vinyl color over the first layer.
For this design, I layered:
the green fishing line and hook around the dark blue text.
The contrast instantly made the tumbler feel more professional and dimensional.
Step 5 – Apply the Decal to the Tumbler
Before applying the decal:
- clean the tumbler surface well
- remove fingerprints or oils
- dry it completely
Then slowly apply the design from the center outward while smoothing with a scraper tool.
Curved tumblers can sometimes create bubbles if applied too quickly, so slow and steady usually works best.
Why Fishing Tumblers Make Great Father’s Day Gifts
Fishing-themed tumblers are one of my favorite Father’s Day craft ideas because they combine:
- personalization
- practicality
- outdoors aesthetics
- and handmade charm
They’re also something dads genuinely use regularly.
Especially for:
- coffee
- road trips
- camping
- fishing weekends
- lake trips
- backyard BBQs
And because the designs can be personalized with names or custom text, they feel much more thoughtful than generic store-bought gifts.

Final Thoughts
This “Hooked on Dad Life” tumbler turned out to be one of my favorite Father’s Day projects lately because it combines:
- simple materials

- layered vinyl
- and cozy outdoors aesthetics
without needing complicated crafting supplies.
Two-color vinyl projects are a great way to make handmade gifts feel a little more custom and professional while still being easy enough for beginners to try.
