Creating a personalized memorial ribbon is a thoughtful way to honor the memory of a loved one. With a Cricut machine, white Heat Transfer Vinyl (HTV), and a mini heat press, you can easily add names, dates, or meaningful messages to a purple remembrance ribbon.
In this tutorial, I’ll show you the complete process, from preparing your design to pressing the vinyl onto the ribbon for a clean, professional finish.
Materials You’ll Need
Before getting started, gather the following supplies:
- Purple memorial ribbon suitable for heat transfer vinyl
- White Heat Transfer Vinyl (HTV)
- Cricut cutting machine
- Cricut Design Space
- Mini heat press (or a household iron)
- Weeding tool
- Scissors
- Butcher paper or parchment paper
- Heat-resistant surface
Step 1: Create Your Design
Open Cricut Design Space and create your personalized text. This can include:
- A loved one’s name
- Birth and passing dates
- A meaningful quote
- A short memorial message
Measure your ribbon before designing so your text fits perfectly.
Important: Always remember to mirror your design before sending it to your Cricut. HTV is cut from the back, so mirroring ensures the text reads correctly after pressing.
Step 2: Cut and Weed the HTV
Load your white HTV onto your Cricut mat with the shiny carrier sheet facing down.
Once the machine finishes cutting:
- Unload the mat.
- Remove the excess vinyl.
- Use a weeding tool to carefully remove the parts you don’t need.
When you’re finished, only your lettering should remain attached to the clear carrier sheet.
Step 3: Prepare the Ribbon
Cut your memorial ribbon to the desired length.
Lay it flat on a heat-resistant surface and smooth out any wrinkles before applying the vinyl.
Position your HTV exactly where you want the finished design to appear.
Step 4: Apply the Heat Transfer Vinyl
Preheat your mini heat press according to the temperature recommended for your HTV.
Place a sheet of butcher paper or parchment paper over the design to help protect both the ribbon and the heat press.
Press firmly onto the design.
Because a mini heat press has a smaller heating surface, work in overlapping sections until the entire design has been pressed.
Apply firm, even pressure for approximately 10–15 seconds per section.
Step 5: Peel the Carrier Sheet
Allow the vinyl to cool for a few seconds.
Most white HTV is a cold peel, meaning you should wait until the carrier sheet has cooled before removing it.
Slowly peel away the clear carrier sheet.
If any part of the vinyl begins to lift, simply place the carrier sheet back down and press that area again for a few more seconds.
Your Personalized Memorial Ribbon Is Finished
