Got your Cricut… and now it’s just sitting there?
You’re not alone. Most beginners get stuck because they don’t know where to start.
This guide will walk you through your first Cricut project step-by-step—no experience needed.
By the end, you’ll have your first finished project (and finally understand how your Cricut actually works).
🎯 What We’re Making
We’re starting with the easiest and most beginner-friendly project:
- A simple vinyl decal
You can apply this to:
- Mugs
- Glass
- Notebooks
- Car surfaces (like gas caps 👀)
This is the fastest way to get a clean, successful result.
🧰 What You Need
- Cricut machine
- Adhesive vinyl
- Transfer tape
- Cutting mat
- Weeding tool
- Scraper (or any flat card)
🖥️ Step 1: Open Cricut Design Space
Open Cricut Design Space on your computer or tablet.
- Click “New Project”
- Click “Upload”
- Upload your SVG or PNG design
Tip: Start with a simple design (bold shapes, no tiny details). Or just type a name in a simple bold font.

📏 Step 2: Resize Your Design
Click your design and resize it to fit your project.
- Mug → ~7–9 cm wide
- Car decal → depends on placement
- Sticker → small and simple
Keep it simple for your first try.
✂️ Step 3: Click “Make It”
Click “Make It” in the top right.
You’ll now see the cutting preview.
- Make sure everything looks correct
- Click “Continue”
⚙️ Step 4: Choose Your Material Settings
Select:
- Material: Vinyl
- Pressure: Default
Load your mat into the machine and press the flashing button to start cutting.
🧼 Step 5: Weed Your Design
Once cutting is done:
- Remove the vinyl from the mat
- Use your weeding tool to remove the extra vinyl
You should now see only your design left.
Tip: Start removing the larger pieces first.
📦 Step 6: Apply Transfer Tape
Place transfer tape over your design.
- Press it down firmly
- Use a scraper or card to smooth it out
This lifts your design in one piece.
✨ Step 7: Apply Your Decal
- Clean your surface
- Place your design
- Press it down firmly
- Slowly peel off the transfer tape
And that’s it—you just made your first Cricut project 🎉
⚠️ Common Beginner Mistakes
- Cutting too small → hard to weed
- Wrong material setting → messy cuts
- Rushing the transfer step
- Using overly detailed designs
Keep your first project simple.
💡 Want Better Results Faster?
The biggest difference between frustration and success is the design you use.
- Clean designs = easier cutting
